A wa.me click-to-chat link is one of the simplest pieces of the web, which makes it all the more annoying when it doesn’t work. The link opens WhatsApp but the chat is empty, or an error says the phone number is invalid, or nothing happens at all. Almost every broken WhatsApp link comes down to one of seven causes. Work through them in order; the first two fix the vast majority of cases.
1. The phone number is in the wrong format
This is the number-one cause. The number in a wa.me link must be in full international format, digits only, a few strict but simple rules:
- Start with the country code (44 for the UK, 1 for the US/Canada, 55 for Brazil).
- Use digits only, no plus sign, no spaces, dashes or brackets.
- Drop the national leading zero, and never add a 00 prefix.
So a UK number written locally as 07911 123456 becomes 447911123456, and a US number (555) 123-4567 becomes 15551234567.
Wrong: https://wa.me/+44 (0)7911 123456, Right: https://wa.me/447911123456
If WhatsApp opens and complains the number is invalid, or the chat shows a strange number, this is almost certainly your problem. The WhatsApp Link Generator formats the number for you and shows a live preview before you copy the link. For the complete set of rules on writing the number and encoding the message, see the full wa.me link format reference.
2. The message isn’t URL-encoded
Everything after ?text= must be URL-encoded: spaces become %20 (or +), and characters like &, ?, # and emoji have their own encodings. An unencoded ampersand is a classic silent breaker, everything after the & is treated as a new URL parameter and dropped, so the chat opens with only half your message.
Don’t encode by hand. A link generator does it automatically, or use your programming language’s encodeURIComponent equivalent if you build links in code.
3. It’s opening inside an in-app browser
Links tapped inside Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or an email app often open in that app’s built-in browser, and some of them are slow or outright broken at handing the link over to WhatsApp. If your link works in Safari or Chrome but not from a social bio or story, this is why. There is no perfect fix on your side, but keeping the link as a plain https://wa.me/… URL (no shorteners, no redirect chains) gives the in-app browser the best chance of handing it straight to WhatsApp.
4. The number isn’t actually on WhatsApp
wa.me can only open chats with numbers that have an active WhatsApp account. If the account was registered with a different number, was recently changed, or is a landline that never had WhatsApp, the link shows “phone number shared via URL is invalid”. Message the number manually from a phone first, if that doesn’t work, the link never will.
5. Punctuation broke the auto-linking
When you paste a wa.me link into a message, bio or document, a trailing full stop, bracket or comma can get swallowed into the link and break it, or the platform stops linking at the ?, cutting off your pre-filled text. Put the link on its own line, or use a proper anchor tag on the web, and always test the link exactly where your audience will tap it.
6. The QR code doesn’t scan
If your link lives on a poster or packaging as a QR code, the link may be fine and the print the problem: too small, too little contrast, no quiet zone (white margin) around the code, or a photo of a screen rather than a clean export. Print at least 2Ă—2 cm for handheld scans (much larger for posters) and use a vector (SVG) export so edges stay sharp. The WhatsApp QR Generator downloads clean PNG, JPG or SVG versions of your code, and it never expires.
7. You’re testing it on the same phone
Opening a link to your own number on your own phone behaves oddly: depending on the platform, WhatsApp may open a chat with yourself, do nothing, or show an error. Before declaring the link broken, test it from a different device or ask someone else to try it.
Still stuck? Rebuild it cleanly
When in doubt, throw the suspect link away and rebuild it: put your number and message into the WhatsApp Link Generator, test the fresh link in a normal browser, then re-embed it wherever it lives, website button, bio, QR code or share widget. Rebuilding takes under a minute and skips hours of staring at percent signs. For the full syntax reference, see the complete wa.me guide.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my wa.me link open WhatsApp with no message?
The ?text= parameter is missing, misspelled, or its value isn’t URL-encoded, an unencoded & or # cuts the message off. Regenerate the link with a generator that encodes automatically.
Why does WhatsApp say “phone number shared via URL is invalid”?
Either the number is malformed (plus signs, spaces or a leading zero in the link) or that number has no active WhatsApp account. Fix the format first; if the error persists, verify the number really is on WhatsApp.
Do wa.me links expire?
No. A wa.me link is just a URL with your number in it, there is nothing to expire. It keeps working as long as the number has a WhatsApp account.
