WhatsApp limits & rules
Every limit WhatsApp enforces in 2026, in one place you can cite: 1,024 members in a group, 2,000 in a community, 32 people on a video call, 2 GB per file and 65,536 characters in a message, plus broadcast lists, forwarding, Channels, the Business app and the official API. Each number is dated and links back to WhatsApp’s own Help Center.
Limits last verified:
#Groups, communities & broadcasts
A WhatsApp group holds up to 1,024 members in 2026, a community up to 2,000 members across 100 groups, and a broadcast list up to 256 recipients. Group size has grown repeatedly over the years, so this is the section most worth re-checking.
| Limit | Value | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Members in a groupThe official group size limit in 2026, admins included: up from 512 in 2022 and 256 before that. It is the same on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web. | 1,024 members | Everyone |
| Groups in a communityPlus the automatic announcement group that reaches every member. | 100 groups | Everyone |
| Members in a communityCounted across all of the community’s groups combined. | 2,000 members | Everyone |
| Recipients in a broadcast listOnly contacts who have your number saved will receive a broadcast. | 256 recipients | Everyone |
#Messages & media
A single WhatsApp message can be up to 65,536 characters and a media caption 1,024 characters. A file sent as a document can be up to 2 GB, while photos and videos shared as media are compressed to about 16 MB, so sending as a document keeps the original quality and unlocks the much larger size cap.
| Limit | Value | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Characters in one messageFar more than anyone types by hand. You will hit a paste limit long before normal use. | 65,536 characters | Everyone |
| Characters in a media captionThe text attached under a photo or video. | 1,024 characters | Everyone |
| Photo / video / voice sent as mediaWhatsApp compresses these so they load inline. Send as a document to avoid compression. | 16 MB | Everyone |
| Any file sent as a documentUp from 100 MB. Documents are not compressed, so quality is preserved. | 2 GB | Everyone |
| Length of a voice messageWhatsApp sets no time cap on a voice note in a chat: in practice the 16 MB media limit ends the recording, which is roughly an hour of audio. | No published limit | Everyone |
| Options in a pollVoters can pick one or several depending on how you set the poll up. | 12 options | Everyone |
| Time you have to edit a sent messageAfter that the Edit option disappears. Edited messages are marked “Edited” for everyone. | 15 minutes | Everyone |
| Time you have to delete for everyone60 hours from sending. Past that you can only delete a message for yourself. | 2 days 12 hours | Everyone |
| Pinned messages in one chatEach pin lasts 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days unless you unpin it sooner. | 3 messages | Everyone |
#Status & forwarding
A WhatsApp Status disappears after 24 hours. Status video clips run up to 30 seconds and voice updates up to 60. WhatsApp also limits forwarding: up to 5 chats at once, or a single chat for a message marked “forwarded many times”, to slow the spread of viral misinformation.
| Limit | Value | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| How long a Status stays upPhoto, video and text updates disappear automatically after a day. | 24 hours | Everyone |
| Length of a Status video clipLonger videos are split into several 30-second segments. | 30 seconds | Everyone |
| Length of a voice statusVoice updates posted to Status, raised from the original 30 seconds. | 60 seconds | Everyone |
| Chats you can forward to at onceA single forward action can target up to five chats or groups. | 5 chats | Everyone |
| Forwarding a “forwarded many times” messageHighly-forwarded messages can only be passed on to one chat at a time. | 1 chat | Everyone |
#Calls
A WhatsApp group call carries up to 32 participants, and voice and video share the same cap: whether you start the call from a group, the Calls tab or WhatsApp on a computer. It was 8 in 2021 and 4 before that, so older articles quote much smaller numbers.
| Limit | Value | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| People in a group video callIncludes you. Raised from 8 in 2021 and 4 before that, so older articles quote much smaller numbers. | 32 participants | Everyone |
| People in a group voice callThe same cap as video. Very old app builds allowed fewer, so keep the app updated. | 32 participants | Everyone |
#Channels
A WhatsApp Channel has no follower limit (the only way to reach an unlimited audience on WhatsApp) and now allows up to 16 admins. Channels are one-way broadcasts to people who choose to follow you; followers cannot reply or see each other.
| Limit | Value | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Followers of a channelThe one WhatsApp surface with no audience cap, but you cannot add people, they have to follow you. | No limit | Everyone |
| Admins of a channelRaised from a single admin, so a team can post to one channel. | 16 admins | Everyone |
| How long channel updates are keptWhatsApp stores channel history on its servers for 30 days; older updates disappear for new followers. | 30 days | Everyone |
#Account & profile
A WhatsApp number is at most 15 digits, your profile “About” line up to 139 characters, a group name 100 and a group description 512. One account can drive up to 4 linked devices alongside your phone.
| Limit | Value | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Linked (companion) devicesUp to four linked devices in addition to your primary phone. | 4 devices | Everyone |
| Chats pinned to the top of the listSeparate from pinned messages inside a chat. | 3 chats | Everyone |

| Characters in your “About” textThe short status line on your profile, not to be confused with Status updates. | 139 characters | Everyone |
| Characters in a group nameThe group subject shown at the top of the chat. | 100 characters | Everyone |
| Characters in a group descriptionThe longer text shown in the group’s info screen. | 512 characters | Everyone |
#WhatsApp Business app
The free WhatsApp Business app adds its own caps: up to 20 labels, 50 quick replies and a catalogue of 500 products. For per-message API pricing and messaging tiers, see the WhatsApp Business API pricing calculator.

#WhatsApp Business API
The official WhatsApp Business API lets you message 250 customers in 24 hours to start, scaling to unlimited as quality holds, at a default throughput of 80 messages per second. What it costs per message is a separate question: see the WhatsApp Business API pricing calculator.
| Limit | Value | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Customers you can message in 24 hoursUnique users you can start a conversation with in a rolling 24 hours. New accounts start at 250 and scale through 2,000, 10,000 and 100,000 as quality holds up. | 250 → unlimited | Business API |
| Messages per second per numberDefault Cloud API throughput; higher capacity can be requested. Separate from the 24-hour limit above. | 80 per second | Business API |
What has changed recently
The numbers that have moved, so you can tell this page apart from the many that quote old figures:
- Groups now hold 1,024 members: double the 512 cap from 2022, and four times the original 256.
- Group calls carry 32 people on voice and video alike, up from 8 in 2021 and 4 before that.
- Files sent as documents can be up to 2 GB, up from the old 100 MB limit.
- Communities bundle up to 100 groups and 2,000 members under one umbrella: a feature that did not exist before late 2022.
- Channels have no follower limit at all and now allow 16 admins instead of one.
- You can pin 3 messages in a chat rather than 1, and edit a sent message for 15 minutes after sending it.
Rules, not just numbers
Some WhatsApp limits are behaviours rather than counts. These are the ones that get accounts restricted.
Bulk and automated sending
Sending the same message to many people who have not saved your number, or using unofficial apps to automate sending, is the fastest way to get a number banned. Use click-to-chat links people tap themselves, or the official Business API.
Being blocked and reported
Many blocks or spam reports in a short window will get a number restricted or banned. Message people who expect to hear from you, and always offer a way to opt out.
New numbers, high volume
A brand-new number that immediately messages hundreds of strangers looks like spam. Warm a number up gradually and keep replies flowing both ways: the WhatsApp number warm-up guide has a day-by-day schedule and the full list of what triggers a ban.
#Non-official sending rates (from experience)
WhatsApp publishes none of this. There is no official daily cap on messages to ordinary contacts, and no official figure for how many strangers you can message before an account is flagged. The numbers below are field estimates from people who send at scale: a useful starting point, never a guarantee. The single most important thing they show: raw volume is not what gets numbers banned. Blocks, reports and replies are. A high-volume sender with a genuinely opted-in list is safer than a low-volume sender messaging people who never asked to hear from them. Full detail, with a day-by-day ramp, is in the WhatsApp number warm-up guide.
Blocks and reports are the real limit
WhatsApp can’t read your messages (they’re end-to-end encrypted), so its strongest spam signal is what recipients do: block you, or report you with a reason like “Didn’t sign up”. Because that is a rate, not a count, volume cuts both ways: 5 blocks out of 10 messages is a 50% spam rate, while 10 out of 1,000 is under 1%. Community reporting puts the safe zone under 1% and the danger line around 2%: the point where an account’s quality drops and restrictions follow.
Replies matter as much as sends
A one-way send pattern is what automation looks like. Practitioners target a reply rate above 30% (50% is better) and treat anything under 15% as a warning. Several 2026 sources also describe a rolling counter of messages that go unanswered for 48 hours across a 30-day window, which is why designing for a reply (“Reply YES to confirm”, a real question) measurably extends how long a number lasts.
Messaging people who don’t have your number saved
This is the riskiest single step for cold outreach and the bulk link helper, even when people genuinely opted in. Someone who doesn’t recognise the number is far more likely to block or report you. Ask people to save your number before you rely on it, and make the first message say who you are.
A realistic daily ceiling: about 20 to 200 messages
On a fresh number, keep first-contact messages to 10–30 a day for the first three days (saved contacts only), 30–50 through week one, and 100–200 by the end of week two. A warmed, established number in good standing tops out around 200 a day: past that, add another number rather than pushing one harder. Keep velocity under 30 an hour and one a minute, inside an eight-hour window, with randomised gaps.
Warm the number up first
A brand-new SIM that immediately messages 100 strangers looks exactly like spam. Warming up means registering on a real local SIM, filling in the profile, waiting a day, then spending three days on genuine two-way chats before any outreach, and raising volume over the following one to two weeks. See the full WhatsApp number warm-up guide for the schedule table, the ranked ban triggers, and the EU consent rules that apply on top of all of this.
None of these figures are published or guaranteed by WhatsApp, and they can change without notice. Many of the sources behind them are vendors selling warm-up or “anti-ban” tools, so treat precise thresholds as directional consensus rather than fact. When a number matters, ramp up cautiously, watch your block and reply rates daily, and stop the moment delivery drops. Note too that none of this makes bulk sending compliant: using an unofficial API to send automated messages breaches WhatsApp’s terms however carefully the number was warmed, and in the EU and UK marketing messages need documented prior consent regardless.
Where these figures come from
These limits are drawn from WhatsApp’s official Help Center and blog and re-verified on the date shown above. WhatsApp can change them at any time and some caps vary by app version, device or region. When a number really matters, confirm it against the WhatsApp Help Center before relying on it.
