What is in it

One row is one party in one place. It records the party’s name, its website, a contact address where one is published, the WhatsApp Channel it runs, and any group or community it runs instead of or alongside one. Places are stored as ISO country and region codes, so a city adds up into a region, a country and a continent without anyone having to agree on spelling.

Each party also carries the group its MEPs sit in at the European Parliament, and a local branch inherits that from its national party. The left-to-right position shown on these pages is derived from that group rather than assigned by us.

Follower counts live separately, as an append-only log: one row per channel per check, never edited. That log is the point: a single number is a screenshot, while a series shows what a campaign actually did.

How this is measured

A WhatsApp Channel has a public page at whatsapp.com/channel/<id>. That page names the channel and says how many people follow it, which is the only number in this project: there is no API, and no way to see who those followers are. A scheduled job reads each registered channel once a day and appends a row to a CSV: the timestamp, the channel, the count, and the outcome of the check.

Failed checks are written down too. A day where a channel could not be read is recorded as a failure rather than left blank, so a gap in the chart is always explained. No reading is ever stored as zero to stand in for “we could not read it”: a zero and a missing measurement mean very different things once you start drawing growth curves.

What it does not tell you

  • Followers are not voters. A channel can be followed by journalists, opponents and people in other countries.
  • Parties started using channels at different times, so a small number can mean a late start rather than a small reach.
  • A party that runs a second channel (a youth wing, say) is listed as its own entry and ranks on its own. Nothing is summed, so no audience is counted twice.
  • Only Channels publish a follower count. Groups and communities are recorded where a party runs one, but their invite pages do not say how many people are in them.

Questions

Where do the follower numbers come from?
Every WhatsApp Channel has a public preview page. Open one in a browser and it shows the channel name, its description and how many people follow it. We read that page once a day for each channel in the registry and write the number down. Nothing is estimated.
How accurate is a follower count?
The counts are exact, not rounded. WhatsApp rounds the figure to two significant digits in English (“7.6K”) but prints the whole number in German and Italian, so we ask for the page in German. On the rare reading where only a rounded figure came back, the table marks it with ≈.
Does a big channel mean a party is winning?
No. It measures one thing: how many people chose to receive that party’s messages on WhatsApp. Parties adopt channels at different times and promote them with wildly different budgets, so treat this as a picture of messaging reach, not of support.
Which parties are included?
Any party whose official channel we can find and verify. The registry is curated by hand and reviewed in public, because “this is the official channel of the CDU in Berlin” is a claim someone has to stand behind. A party with no channel listed either does not run one or we have not found it, tell us if you know of one.
How often are the numbers updated?
Each entry carries its own cadence. Most are read quarterly, which is the right resolution for a long-running series; entries somewhere with an election coming are moved to daily. Because every entry becomes due on its own schedule, the work spreads itself across the quarter rather than arriving as one enormous burst.
Where does “far right” or “centre left” come from?
From the group the party’s MEPs sit in at the European Parliament (EPP, S&D, Renew, Greens/EFA, ECR, Patriots for Europe, Europe of Sovereign Nations or The Left) and, for a local branch, from the national party it belongs to. It is an affiliation you can check, not our reading of a manifesto. Where we depart from that mapping the entry has to cite a source.
What do the ✓ and “personal” marks mean?
A ✓ next to a party means WhatsApp shows the verification badge on its channel: we read that off the channel’s own page each time we check it, so it can change. A “personal” tag means the linked channel belongs to a candidate rather than the party, which happens when a local list runs no channel of its own; it is flagged so a personal channel is never mistaken for the party’s official one.
Can I reuse the data?
Yes, under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, so reuse it with credit. The measurement log is a plain CSV, one row per channel per check, and the whole dataset (the registry, the profiles and the full log) is published as a public repository and archived on Zenodo with a DOI. Every row carries the timestamp and the status of the check, including the failed ones.
