First, the rule that protects your number
WhatsApp watches for spam and blocks numbers that send it. The cheap “bulk sender” apps that fire messages from an ordinary SIM are exactly what gets banned, often within hours. The dependable way to reach a larger list is the official WhatsApp Business Platform (the WhatsApp Business API), where you message people who asked to hear from you using approved message templates.
You don’t deal with the API directly: you use an official provider that puts a friendly dashboard on top of it. The catch is that not everyone is accepted onto that platform. We’ll cover what to do either way.
Goal 1: Set up a chatbot
A chatbot replies automatically, answering common questions, pointing people to the right place, collecting sign-ups or bookings, at any hour. You don’t need to code. A few no-code builders cover most situations:
ManyChat: quick to start, strong on Instagram
A good first choice if your audience is on Instagram as well as WhatsApp. You build flows by dragging blocks around, and the Instagram and Messenger channels are quick to set up while WhatsApp needs an approved Business API number.

Chatfuel: built-in AI replies
If you want an assistant that answers in natural language rather than fixed buttons, Chatfuel has AI built in. It’s often used by online stores, but works for any group that fields a lot of similar questions. Give the AI clear limits and a human hand-off.

Landbot: also works without the WhatsApp API
Landbot’s visual editor is great for turning a form into a friendly conversation. It runs on your website with no API needed, which makes it a practical option if you can’t get onto the official WhatsApp platform.

Goal 2: Message a list of contacts
On WhatsApp, reaching many people at once means sending an approved message to a list of contacts who agreed to hear from you. Done on the official platform, you can reach a large list without risking your number.
Wati: official API, with a shared team inbox
Wati is built for this: import your opted-in contacts, send approved messages, and handle the replies in a shared inbox so a whole team can pitch in from one number. It also does chatbots, so some organisations use it as their single WhatsApp hub.
→ Step-by-step: How to Send Bulk WhatsApp Messages with Wati (Broadcasts & Templates)
Worth knowing: on the official platform you can only message people who opted in, and the first message often has to use a pre-approved template. That’s the trade-off that keeps your number safe and your messages delivered.
Can’t use the official WhatsApp Business API?
Most paid WhatsApp tools (including ManyChat, Chatfuel, Wati and Landbot’s WhatsApp channel) send messages through Meta’s official WhatsApp Business API. That platform has eligibility rules, and not everyone is accepted. In particular, political, electoral and some advocacy or campaigning uses are frequently not permitted, and providers may decline those applications.
If that’s you (a party, a campaign, or an organisation Meta won’t onboard) you can still do a lot without the API, free of charge and within WhatsApp’s rules.
- Use the free tools on this site: the click-to-chat Link Generator (share a number or a ready-written message as a link or QR code) and the Share Widget.
- Use WhatsApp’s own features in the normal or Business app: Broadcast lists (one-way messages to up to 256 people who have saved your number), Communities and Groups for ongoing coordination.
- Run a chatbot on your website instead of WhatsApp (Landbot’s web channel works without the API), or on Instagram/Messenger.
- Use a workflow-automation tool like n8n, Zapier or Make to automate around these tools, but don’t use them to blast messages from a personal number, which is how accounts get blocked.

Goal 3: Connect things together
Once a chatbot or a contact list is running, you often want WhatsApp to talk to your other tools: your records, a spreadsheet, or an AI model that drafts replies. That’s the job of a workflow-automation tool: n8n if you want to self-host, or Zapier and Make if you’d rather everything ran in the cloud. None of them message WhatsApp by themselves: they connect it (through the official Cloud API) to the rest of your stack.
n8n: automation glue you can self-host
n8n moves information between apps and can add AI steps along the way. You can run it on your own server, which is useful if you’d rather keep your data in-house. It doesn’t send WhatsApp messages by itself: pair it with one of the methods above, and don’t use it to blast a personal number.

Zapier: the widest choice of app integrations
Zapier is fully hosted, with the largest app catalogue of any tool of its kind, so it’s the quickest way to wire WhatsApp to whatever else you use. Its WhatsApp connection runs on the official Cloud API; pricing is per task, which can add up at volume.

Make: visual power at a lower price
Make (formerly Integromat) gives you a visual canvas with branching and data tools: more power than the simplest no-code tools, usually cheaper than Zapier, and still hosted for you. Like the others it connects WhatsApp through the official Cloud API rather than sending on its own.
